THIS DAY IN HISTORY September 6, 1901 President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz while attending a public event in Buffalo, New York. Despite initial hope for his recovery, McKinley succumbed to his wounds eight days later. His assassination led to Vice President Theodore Roosevelt assuming the presidency.
