Reporting that can change (and even save) lives

Dear readers, Tremane Wood’s brother said he killed a man during a botched robbery. But Wood was sentenced to die for the crime — until today. This morning, minutes before Wood was scheduled to be executed, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt granted him clemency. It is only the second time Gov. Stitt has commuted a death sentence since entering office in 2019. HuffPost reporter Jessica Schulberg has been following Wood’s case for years, chronicling his clemency bid. “I’ve read thousands of pages of court documents and interviewed Wood’s friends, family, girlfriend, lawyers, and codefendants, as well as the victims of his crime, to learn about the case,” Schulberg said. “The surviving victim of the crime, as well as the mother of the man who died, do not want Wood to be executed, they told me.” HuffPost’s coverage shed light on Wood’s case — from his severely impaired trial lawyer to the Oklahoma attorney general working behind the scenes to try to tank Tremane’s chances of clemency. Today’s improbable turn of events would not have happened without this kind of relentless reporting — or without your support. If you ever needed a sign that supporting journalism matters, this is it. And we hope you’ll continue to support HuffPost as we call out injustice and cover the cases others ignore. Schulberg was one of five people Wood selected to witness his execution. Today, she was there as his friends and family celebrated instead.
